KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Bursa Malaysia stayed lower at mid-morning as selling activity continued amid cautious sentiment following higher oil prices which rose above US$101 (RM410) per barrel, fuelling concerns over sustained inflation and higher energy costs for consumers.
At 11am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) shed 7.52 points to 1,706.82 from Wednesday’s close of 1,714.34, after opening 1.64 points lower at 1,712.70.
Market breadth was negative, with losers exceeding gainers 512 to 353. A total of 483 counters were unchanged, 1,483 untraded and 21 suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.51 billion shares worth RM864.49 million.
Apex Securities Bhd said energy counters may extend their gains as Brent crude climbs above US$100 per barrel amid escalating West Asia tensions.
Plantation counters could also see some interest, with higher oil prices lending indirect support to crude palm oil prices.
“Support is seen at 1,700, with a break below opening the door to a retest of 1,685.
“A break above 1,720-1,725 could show that the rebound is more than just a temporary bounce. However, a break above 1,750-1,755 would be a stronger sign that the overall trend is starting to change,” the brokerage firm said in a note today.
