KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — An online seller pleaded not guilty in the Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court to cheating a customer who paid more than RM41,000 for a luxury handbag that did not exist.

The accused, Christina Tseu Cheau Wei, 36, was alleged to have deceived Teh Ann Na, 53, into transferring RM41,288 to her bank account for a Hermes Mini Lindy handbag at Laguna Heights Condominium on August 26 last year, The Star reported.

She faces a charge under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Fatihah Mohd Nizam sought bail of RM10,000.

Defence lawyer Jason Tan Ka Yan urged the court to impose a lower amount, saying, “The accused is supporting her mother who suffers from blood cancer as well as her two children aged 12 and 17.”

He added that Tseu works as an online trader with irregular income.

Magistrate A. Shaarmini fixed bail at RM4,000 with one surety and set June 9 for mention.
