KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — The government has found that Facebook and TikTok account for most scam‑related content flagged for removal, with 127,568 posts taken down as of today.

Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the issue included fake content such as information on the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme that was not announced by the Finance Ministry.

He said the fake content amounted to 27 per cent of the total content that was requested to be taken down.

“Additionally, the figure can be broken down, where 53 per cent were on Facebook, 39 per cent on TikTok, and the remainder were on other social media platforms,” he said in the weekly media post-cabinet briefing that was broadcast live today.

Fahmi said the issue of fake accounts was also a big problem, especially involving fraudulent activities, as such accounts are easy to create and allow false information to be spread quickly.

The communications minister said most such accounts use platforms such as Facebook and TikTok for scam activities.

“However, this is just what has been reported,” he said.

Fahmi called on the public to check particular content for authenticity by accessing government platforms such as Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck to verify information they receive.

He said the public is also encouraged to seek verification through mainstream media.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the government has issued and gazetted two legislative codes to safeguard the public on social media platforms.

“The Child Protection Code (CPC) and the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) must be complied with by identified social media platforms.

“They have also been given a period of several months to ensure that all actions are taken in a coordinated manner to avoid content that is harmful and has the potential to threaten property or life,” he said.
