PENAMPANG, Aug 29 — Parents should educate and remind their children, particularly teenagers, not to become involved in mule account syndicates, which could expose them to legal action.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister, said allowing others to use their bank accounts could expose account holders to legal action if the accounts were found to have been used for fraud or other unlawful transactions.
“This is something we need to pay attention to. We need to remind ourselves, parents and children, especially teenagers, not to be easily deceived or allow their accounts to be used by others.
“Digital technology is now part of our daily lives. Therefore, while making use of technology, we also need to understand the risks and threats that come with it,” he said at the Digital Parenting Programme Series IV for the Kapayan state constituency, organised by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), here today.
Ewon, who is also Penampang Member of Parliament, said digital technology had changed how people carried out various activities, including financial transactions, business dealings and applications for government assistance.
He said QR code payments were also becoming increasingly common, including among traders at markets, showing that digital transactions were now part of everyday life.
“The same applies to the various entrepreneurship grants available nationwide. Many grant applications for entrepreneurs, associations and cooperatives, including those provided by the federal government, are now submitted online.
“However, the use of digital technology needs to be balanced so that people, especially young people, do not become too focused on their smartphones and neglect their responsibilities and other important aspects of life,” he said.
On the programme, Ewon expressed hope that the sharing sessions would enhance parents’ knowledge and help them guide their children in using digital technology safely, responsibly and wisely.
“I will continue to support parenting initiatives like this, which not only benefit the community but also remind me of my own responsibilities as a father,” he said. — Bernama
