KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has publicly rebuked Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia over a series of recent actions he said had weakened Perikatan Nasional (PN) and disrupted the administration of several Opposition-led states.
According to The New Straits Times, Tuan Ibrahim said political alliances must be anchored on trust and solidarity, warning that recent developments involving Bersatu were straining ties within the coalition ahead of the 16th general election.
“Political cooperation must be built on trust and solidarity. Efforts should be made to strengthen them, not otherwise.
“Many of Bersatu’s actions lately have been seen as weakening PN, to the extent that they disrupted the smooth administration of state governments,” he said in remarks reported by the national daily.
The PN deputy chairman cited several flashpoints that have fuelled dissatisfaction within PAS, including Bersatu’s withdrawal of support for allies in Perlis, the retraction of statutory declarations linked to Negri Sembilan, and the sacking and suspension of state executive councillors and deputy speakers in Kelantan and Kedah.
“These actions do not help the coalition and had disappointed the people,” he said.
Tuan Ibrahim also appeared to caution Bersatu against escalating internal disciplinary actions that could further fracture cooperation within PN.
“I don’t want to meddle in Bersatu’s disciplinary affairs, but we should be working towards making fewer enemies and more allies,” he added.
His remarks come amid increasingly open signs of tension between PAS and Bersatu, after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said yesterday that the Islamist party was reassessing its political cooperation with Bersatu.
Hadi also did not rule out the possibility of PAS contesting the next general election without Bersatu if both parties fail to reach an agreement on future cooperation within PN.
Tuan Ibrahim said he agreed with Hadi’s position, adding that other PAS leaders shared similar concerns about the coalition’s direction.
“We do not want history to repeat itself, so we need to be cautious now with Bersatu,” he said.
