SIBU, May 16 — The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) will defend all eight seats it currently holds in the next Sarawak state election, said party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
He said the decision is based on the fact that the party’s incumbents have worked hard and deserve the opportunity to continue serving their respective constituents.
Tiong, who is also Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, noted that the merger between PDP and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) in April 2024 has significantly strengthened the party, which now boasts 205,000 members nationwide.
“This reflects the people’s confidence in our familyhood and our struggle,” he said when addressing the PDP Triennial General Assembly (TGA) 2026 which was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.
Of the eight seats, five namely Tasik Biru, Meluan, Krian, Marudi and Dudong were won by PDP in the 12th Sarawak state election, while the remaining three — Bawang Assan, Engkilili and Ba’kelalan were added added following the dissolution of PSB and the absorption of its members as a bloc.
Tiong said PDP has emerged as one of the key components in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition and should play a more significant role in Sarawak’s political landscape, particularly in championing the state’s rights and development agenda.
He also reaffirmed PDP’s full support for the leadership of Abang Johari in ensuring the smooth implementation of the state’s development agenda.
At the same time, he stressed that the principles of power-sharing, consensus and mutual respect within GPS must continue to be preserved, while rejecting any form of interference that could undermine the coalition’s harmony.
He added that PDP would not compromise on matters involving the state’s interests and remains committed to fighting firmly for the rights of all Sarawakians.
Tiong added that the TGA 2026 was not merely an organisational process, but also an important platform to formulate strategies, strengthen internal unity and prepare the party for the coming election. — Bernama
