WARSAW, Aug 27 — Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said on Thursday that he had formally asked the European Commission to fine US tech giant Meta €250 million (about US$291.3 million), reported Xinhua.
The request was submitted after reviewing materials, including those provided by Meta, as well as media reports about inadequate control over content published on its platforms, Gawkowski said on social media platform X.
Digital platforms must bear full responsibility for their actions, he said, adding that inaction and ineffectiveness in combating scam advertisements and fraudulent content harmful to Poles would not be tolerated.
Gawkowski said he expects the European Commission to swiftly move forward with the proceedings and impose a penalty.
He called on Meta to introduce effective tools immediately to eliminate scams, fake advertisements, and the promotion of illegal apps.
Meta owns and operates social media and communication platforms including Facebook and Instagram. — Bernama-Xinhua
