SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 — Federal narcotics police foiled an international drug syndicate’s tactic of storing ganja flowers supplied from neighbouring countries at residences near international airports before they were transported by drug mules, following the arrest of nine individuals earlier this month.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the arrests were the result of a month-long operation from July 12 to August 3 aimed at crippling a drug distribution network transporting drugs to Europe.
“The syndicate’s modus operandi was to temporarily store the ganja flowers obtained via our northern neighbour at terrace houses near Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas and Kuala Lumpur International Airport near Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
“The drugs would then be handed over to various drug mules recruited and exploited by the syndicate.
“The overall drug seizure weighed 270.27kg, with an estimated value of RM21.62 million, enough to supply some 630,000 users,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters here.
He said that of the nine arrested in three separate police raids, five were Portuguese nationals, two were Singaporeans, and one each was Malaysian and Burmese.
All those arrested were aged between 22 and 51, and are believed to have acted as drug mules, coordinators, transporters and syndicate members.
Hussein said the first police raid on July 12 in front of a hotel lobby in Bayan Lepas led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of 290 packages of ganja flowers stored at residences and in luggage in Penang and Mantin, Negeri Sembilan.
Following the initial raid, police arrested six more suspects around Sepang, Selangor, and Bayan Lepas on August 3, seizing an additional 60 packages of ganja flowers.
“This latest success is a testament to our commitment to dismantling an international drug distribution syndicate using Malaysia as a transit route to smuggle ganja flowers overseas,” he said.
