IPOH, Sept 5 — Police detained four local men early yesterday morning in connection with two separate cable theft cases in Kampar and Kuala Kangsar.

Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the first arrest in Kampar was made at about 4.30 am when a Malim Nawar Police Station patrol team spotted two men, aged 42 and 46, acting suspiciously at the Muniswarar Temple in Bata Malim Nawar.

He said the inspection resulted in the seizure of two cable cutters and five rolls of cable, which Telekom Malaysia (TM) technicians later confirmed belonged to the company.

“The telephone line cable had been cut and was no longer functioning, resulting in an estimated loss of about RM1,000 to TM,” he said in a statement last night.

In a separate incident in Kuala Kangsar, he said police were alerted by members of the public at about 3 am to the suspicious movement of two vehicles around Taman Sri Pagi, Kati.

Mohd Alwi said, acting on the information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kuala Kangsar District Police Headquarters arrested two men, aged 24 and 36, along Jalan Raja Chulan.

Following the arrest, he said police seized a silver Toyota Vios, a cable cutter, a cable-pulling iron, three rolls of cable, a crossbody bag, a mobile phone and several other items believed to be linked to the case.

Mohd Alwi said checks revealed that all four suspects had previous records, including for drug-related offences.

He said both cases were being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, with police also probing the suspects’ possible involvement in other cable theft cases in the district. — Bernama
