KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — Police say an automotive college that hired a man now suspected of molesting and sodomising two teenage students did not carry out a background check before employing him.

According to the New Straits Times, initial investigations found the college had failed to verify whether the employee had a criminal record.

“As a result, the college was unaware that the individual had a record involving sexual offences,” district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah said.

Sarudin said police will record statements from the college’s management to assist the investigation.

He said the suspect had worked at the college for about two years.

Police have so far recorded statements from one of the complainants and the suspect’s father.

Sarudin said the suspect is currently remanded until July 11 and that police are awaiting medical reports.

Police arrested the man yesterday after receiving reports from two 15‑year‑old boys.

The first complainant alleged he was molested in a hostel toilet, while the second claimed he was sodomised at the suspect’s house in Section 18, Shah Alam.

Police said the first case is being investigated under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, while the second is being investigated under Section 377C of the Penal Code for carnal intercourse against the order of nature.

Both offences carry a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
