MARANG, Aug 25 — A male prisoner died after he was believed to have been beaten by three other inmates at a prison in the district yesterday.
Marang District Police chief Supt Sofian Redzuan said police received a report of the case at 12.31pm yesterday, and the incident was believed to have stemmed from an old debt and the three suspects’ dissatisfaction with the victim.
He said the 38-year-old victim was pronounced dead due to a ruptured spleen, believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma such as punches or kicks.
“The victim, who was from Terengganu, was beaten in a room by three suspects aged between 21 and 35. He was then taken to the Merchang Health Clinic for treatment but was pronounced dead by a medical officer.
“The victim’s body was sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) for a post-mortem,” he said in a statement today.
Sofian said the three suspects, also from Terengganu, had been detained for further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
