KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Malaysia’s automotive industry has room to further leverage the country’s strong electrical and electronics (E&E) ecosystem as vehicles increasingly shift toward electrical and electronic components, according to Proton Holdings Bhd.
Its deputy chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa, said continued supportive government policies would be important for the automotive industry to sustain its growth and strengthen the convergence between the E&E and automotive sectors.
Responding to a question on Proton’s wish list for Budget 2027, he said Malaysia is already in a strong position within Asean’s automotive landscape, leading the region in two areas, namely domestic total industry volume (TIV) and vehicle safety.
“For 2025, we registered the highest domestic TIV volume of 820,000 units in Asean, despite Malaysia’s total population being only number five,” he told Bernama in an interview at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo 2026 (GATE Expo 2026), here today.
Abdul Rashid said Malaysia also leads in automotive safety, with the Asean New Car Assessment Programme (Asean NCAP) safety assessment undertaken in the country.
He said Malaysia needs to continue leading in both areas, supported by government policies that enable the domestic automotive industry to continue growing.
Abdul Rashid noted that the automotive industry involves about 700,000 workers, while the government is also pushing for greater technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and promoting component development to leverage Malaysia’s strong E&E industry.
“The government is pushing for more TVET and promoting more and more components to ride on our strong E&E industry, so that there will be a crossbreed of technology from E&E into the automotive industry,” he said.
Abdul Rashid also expressed hope that Malaysia would continue to prosper, with the automotive industry contributing further to national economic growth. — Bernama
