KUCHING, Aug 12 — A 29-year-old woman claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing injury to a 20-day-old baby at a confinement centre here last week.
The accused, from Puncak Borneo, pleaded not guilty before Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar after she was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611).
The offence carries a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
The court then granted the accused a court bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties and her to report to a police station once a month.
The case was fixed for pre-trial case management on Sept 14.
The charge alleged that the accused, who was entrusted with the care of the baby, had negligently handled and lifted the child from a baby cot in a manner likely to cause physical injury.
The incident was alleged to have occurred between 12.30am and 1.30am at a confinement centre here on Aug 4.
The baby was alleged to have sustained a closed fracture of the right humerus.
Deputy public prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Roger Chin. — The Borneo Post
