MIRI, May 17 — Events such as the Miri City International Deep Sea Fishing Tournament not only promote sports fishing and tourism, but also strengthen friendship, cultural exchange and international cooperation among participants from different countries.

In this regard, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hailed the tournament as an important tourism event for Miri, and Sarawak in general.

Organised by Miri Anglers Club, the 14th edition gathered 58 anglers from five countries.

“This clearly shows that international interest in Miri’s fishing tourism remains strong and continues to grow.

“We hope it will continue to grow bigger and stronger in the years ahead,” he said in his speech for the prize presentation yesterday, where he was represented by Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii.

On tourism development, Abdul Karim said it could not succeed through the efforts of only one party.

“It requires strong cooperation, coordination and continuous support from many sectors and agencies.

“Every stakeholder plays an important role in ensuring visitors enjoy a smooth and memorable experience in Miri.”

He also highlighted the recent approval by the federal government for the expansion of Miri Airport, describing it as a positive and strategic development for Northern Sarawak.

“With improved airport facilities and the potential introduction of more flights in the future, we can expect an increase in tourist arrivals, which will directly contribute to the growth of Miri’s tourism sector and the local economy.”

Meanwhile, Yaw Ping Ping emerged the champion of the Individual category.

The 35-year-old Mirian landed a 33.54kg dogtooth tuna, which earned her the grand cash prize of RM10,000.

In the Team category, the winner was Team 15, of which the members consisted of Louriston Frank Clifton and Mohd Azrul Said from Malaysia, and Ma Jun from China.

Their total haul weighed 69.95kg, comprising a grouper, a yellow fin tuna and a dogtooth tuna. For this, the team won RM15,000.
