KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Air quality in Serian, Sarawak, has deteriorated sharply, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) hitting a hazardous 302 as of 10am today.
The spike comes just a day after His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, consented to lift the state of emergency declared for the division.
According to the latest data from the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, the reading in Serian is currently the only one nationwide classified as hazardous (API above 300).
This is the threshold at which the government typically considers implementing movement restrictions and school closures.
Sarawak currently dominates the “very unhealthy” band (API 201–300), with three stations recording critical levels: Kuching at 249, Sri Aman at 235, and Samarahan at 233.
Samarahan’s air quality has also worsened since Monday’s reading of 226, reinforcing warnings from federal and state authorities for residents to limit outdoor activities.
The haze has also spread extensively across Peninsular Malaysia, with “unhealthy” readings (API 101–200) recorded across several states:
Sarawak: Mukah (184), Sarikei (183), Samalaju (178), Bintulu (170), ILP Miri (169), Sibu (166), and Miri (165).
Selangor: Johan Setia (168), Shah Alam (164), Banting (159), Klang (156), Petaling Jaya (154), and Kuala Selangor (152).
Perak: Tasek Ipoh (161), Seri Manjung (159), Tanjung Malim (156), and Pegoh Ipoh (152).
Negeri Sembilan: Nilai (157) and Seremban (152).
Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya: Cheras (155) and Putrajaya (155).
Melaka: Alor Gajah (143) and Bukit Rambai (141).
