KUCHING, Sept 5 — Air quality in Serian improved slightly, with its Air Pollutant Index (API) reading dropping to 390 by 7am today from 498, which was categorised as very hazardous at 8pm yesterday.
According to the Natural Resources Environment Board’s Air Pollutant Index (API) Status for Sarawak, Kuching’s API reading also fell to 277 by 7am from 298 at 8pm, but remained at a very unhealthy level.
Other locations that recorded very unhealthy air quality at 7am were Tebedu, with an API reading of 293, followed by Lundu (279), Samarahan (271), Lubok Antu (269), Sri Aman (261) and Kanowit (202).
Of these, Tebedu and Lundu moved out of the hazardous zone, with their readings falling from 360 and 314, respectively, at 8pm.
Limbang’s air quality deteriorated, with its API reading soaring to 155, an unhealthy level, from a moderate reading of 96 at 8pm.
The API reading in Kapit also climbed into the unhealthy zone, reaching 122 from a moderate reading of 93 at 8pm.
Other areas that registered unhealthy API readings by 7am included Bintulu, which topped the list at 189, followed by Samalaju and Betong (both 188), Mukah (183), Industrial Training Institute (181), Sarikei (179), Sibu and Miri (both 174), Lawas (129) and Kapit (122).
The only location with a moderate API reading by 7am was Bario, at 75.
An API reading of 401 and above is classified as very hazardous, while readings between 301 and 400 are categorised as hazardous, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, and 51 to 100 as moderate. — The Borneo Post
