Storm hits Klang Valley: Flash floods, toppled trees and road congestion from Ampang to Meru and beyond (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Flash floods hit several parts of the Klang Valley this afternoon following hours of heavy rain, causing traffic congestion and disruption in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

In the Klang Valley, heavy rain led to rising water levels in several areas, with motorists reporting slow-moving traffic and flooded roads in multiple locations on social media platforms.

On X, Threads, and Facebook, users shared photos and videos of waterlogged roads – some covering the top of tyres on sedan cars – in Ampang and Gombak in Kuala Lumpur and even the Selangor suburbs of Setia Alam, Meru and Hulu Langat.

Trees were also reported to have toppled over onto roads, further impeding traffic flow.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a thunderstorm warning covering large parts of the country.

In an updated alert, MetMalaysia said the same stormy conditions are expected to continue till 6pm in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected in Perlis; Kedah; Perak; and Pahang, including Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Bera and Rompin.

In Sarawak, affected areas include Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song), Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.

In Sabah, the warning covers the Interior, West Coast areas including Kota Kinabalu and Ranau, as well as Tawau and Sandakan divisions.

MetMalaysia also warned of severe weather in the short-term as rainfall is expected to exceed 20mm per hour in certain areas.
