SHAH ALAM, May 21 — Senior political advisor to the Prime Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, for granting him an audience yesterday and for His Royal Highness’ reminder on the importance of unity.

In a Facebook post, Tengku Zafrul said the Sultan’s advice should be understood within the framework of Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy, which has long been a pillar of national stability.

“The Sultan’s remarks are not political interference but the counsel and views of a ruler, born of responsibility to safeguard harmony and the interests of the people,” he said.

He added that in Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy, a royal address is a reminder drawn from the wisdom of the institution, intended for the good of the state and its people, and should not be misinterpreted as a decree or command.

Tengku Zafrul stressed that the Sultan’s call was aimed at strengthening unity across Malaysia’s diverse society, not solely among Malays, and highlighted how Malay and Islamic values should serve as a foundation for national stability that protects all communities.

“What the Sultan expressed was not just about Malay unity, but how the strength of Malays and Islam must be the pillar of national stability, safeguarding the interests of all races and religions,” he said.

He noted that Islamic civilisation itself showed that greatness was built not on division or hatred but on knowledge, justice, stability and inclusivity.

“The true strength of a nation lies not in who shouts the loudest, but in the ability of its people to live together with mutual respect and trust,” he added, citing lessons from the Ottoman Empire’s inclusive and stable civilisation.

Tengku Zafrul urged that the Sultan’s advice be seen as a call to close ranks, strengthen harmony and avoid divisive politics. He warned against attempts to politicise the issue, which could strain relations among leaders and undermine social cohesion in Selangor.

With global uncertainties such as energy and supply crises, Malaysia needed mature politics that build public confidence and ensure stability, he said.

“Continuous focus must be given to strengthening institutions, fostering unity and building bridges of understanding between communities, not fuelling division that will ultimately destroy the nation,” he added.

He also urged Malaysians to remain steadfast in upholding the five principles of the Rukun Negara as a guide for a peaceful, harmonious and successful society.
