KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Kota Kinabalu police are investigating the alleged assault of a 13-year-old girl who was reportedly beaten by five female students in an incident that surfaced after a video went viral on social media.
The teenager suffered bruises to her shoulders, legs and left ear, as well as a minor injury to her knee, according to acting Kota Kinabalu police chief Superintendent Syed Lot Syed Abdul Rahman in a statement today.
Police said they received a report from the victim at about 7.51am on May 23, a day after the incident allegedly took place in the city.
Initial investigations found the girl was allegedly assaulted by five students from several different schools in the Kota Kinabalu area following what police described as a misunderstanding and lingering dissatisfaction among those involved.
Syed Lot said all the students were believed to know one another through a WhatsApp group called “Angel”.
Investigators also believe two of the suspects had brought the victim to the location before the group allegedly surrounded and assaulted her.
“The victim also claimed she was threatened and told not to inform her family members or the police about the incident,” he said.
The assault was reportedly witnessed by several students and members of the public before footage of the incident was recorded and later spread online.
Police are investigating the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
A one-minute video purportedly showing the attack had circulated widely on social media since yesterday, with many users condemning the violence involving schoolgirls.
