Threat ends as Sabah wildlife officers kill 14-foot croc near in Sipitang river near jetty to Labuan

SIPITANG, August 15 — A 14-foot male crocodile was caught and shot dead by the Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) on Thursday, bringing relief to residents who had been living in fear of the reptile at Kampung Tanjung Pagar.

A village resident said they were grateful for the department’s swift action in dealing with the crocodile, which had earlier been caught using a fishing line.

The crocodile was frequently spotted at the mouth of the river near Kg Tanjung Pagar before it was shot dead and handed over to a licensed crocodile hunter.

However, residents have been warned to remain cautious as other crocodiles could still be in the area.

“There could still be other crocodiles there, so residents need to be careful when they are near the river, as crocodiles can attack suddenly and prey on those who are unaware,” the resident said.

The area is also near the boat jetty serving passengers travelling to Labuan, who have been urged to exercise caution when boarding passenger boats.

The residents thanked the Wildlife Department for successfully capturing and eliminating the crocodile and hoped operations would continue to deal with other crocodiles that could pose a threat to residents and boat passengers.

Meanwhile, villagers at Kg Pelakat Skim, together with the Wildlife Department, have been setting fishing lines in a drain after crocodiles were spotted there.

According to residents, a crocodile had frequently been seen swimming in the drain, raising concerns over the potential danger, particularly to children who often spend time near the area, including those who enjoy fishing.

“We advise residents to be more careful when approaching or playing near the drain,” they said.

The residents said they had lodged a complaint with the Wildlife Department regarding the crocodile, prompting officers to visit the area and set fishing lines in an effort to catch it. — Daily Express
