JOHOR BAHRU, June 9 — A 28-year-old male primary school teacher claimed trial in the Sessions Court here today to seven counts of sexually assaulting a female pupil between 2024 and 2025.

The accused, Mohamad Amirul Awang Meran, who has been teaching for five years, also claimed trial in the Magistrates’ Court to two counts of possessing obscene material found on his mobile phones.

The accused, who is attached to a primary school in Masai, entered his plea after the charges were read before three judicial officers — Judge Nor Aziati Jaafar, Judge Madihah Zainol and Magistrate Afifah Hazimah Wahab.

Before Judge Nor Aziati, the accused was charged with three counts of physical sexual assault involving a victim with whom he had a position of trust as a teacher.

The offences were alleged to have taken place in a car parked at a playground area in Masai on three separate occasions in 2024, when the victim was 11 years old.

Before Judge Madihah, the accused was charged with two additional counts of physical sexual assault involving the same victim at the same location in 2025, when she was 12 years old.

In the Magistrates’ Court, the accused was charged with two counts of storing obscene material on two mobile phones at a location in Masai at 10.30pm on May 21.

All offences are framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act, which provides enhanced penalties for individuals in positions of trust.

The obscene material charges fall under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which criminalises possession of obscene objects.

Deputy public prosecutors Nur Farah Wahida Shahudin, S. Manushri and Sarah Siti Aisyah Mustapha Kamal proposed bail of RM20,000, along with additional conditions if bail was granted.

Counsel Nur Zafirah Norizan, representing the accused, requested a lower bail amount, saying her client earns a net monthly income of RM3,000 and supports his parents in Terengganu, both of whom suffer from neurological disease.

She also said the accused, the eldest of three siblings, supports a younger brother who is still studying, and that he has been diagnosed with moderate depression disorder.

Judge Nor Aziati set bail at RM10,000, Judge Madihah set bail at RM3,000, and Magistrate Afifah Hazimah set bail at RM6,000.

The court imposed additional conditions, including that the accused must not contact or harass the victim or witnesses, report to a nearby police station once a month, and surrender his passport.

The case has been set for mention and submission of documents on July 13.
