KOTA TINGGI, June 11 — Police arrested a couple after they were believed to be involved in a knife-wielding robbery of a ride-sharing driver at the Tun Sri Lanang bus terminal here yesterday.
Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said the couple, both aged 20, were nabbed in separate locations by policemen from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) yesterday.
He said the female suspect was nabbed at the Tun Sri Lanang bus terminal here at 11am, followed by the arrest of the male suspect at Dataran Larkin in Johor Bahru at 2.30pm.
“Police also seized a knife, suspected to be the weapon used in the robbery attempt, from the couple,” he said in a statement today.
Yusof was commenting on police investigations into the attempted robbery of the Grab driver who was injured after his throat was slit in the incident.
In preliminary investigations, Yusof said that the suspects tested negative for any narcotic abuse.
However, he said both had prior criminal records.
“The couple was earlier brought to the Magistrate’s Court here this morning for a remand application.
“Police were granted a five-day remand period for the suspects to assist in the investigation,” he said.
Yusof said police were first alerted to the incident after authorities received a Malaysian Emergency Response Services 999 (MERS 999) distress call.
He said the 30-year-old victim was injured in the incident, but did not suffer any financial losses.
Police are investigating the case under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery.
Two black and white photos of the victim’s neck injury, one before and another after being stitched, were widely circulated on Facebook yesterday.
