IPOH, Aug 13 — Three men, including a police constable, were arrested after police seized drugs worth RM18,534 at the Lumut police station lock-up in Manjung.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the drugs were found during an inspection of the lock-up on Tuesday at about 8.30am.
He said police found 16 small plastic tubes containing 109g of methamphetamine, 16 plastic tubes containing 110g of heroin and 23 tubes containing 142g of dried cannabis leaves.
“Following the seizure, we arrested two suspects, in their 40s, who are supposed to be charged for drugs-related offences.
“We also arrested the policeman, in his 30s, who is stationed at the location, to assist the investigation,” he said at a press conference at the Perak police headquarters here.
He said the two drug suspects tested positive for drugs, while all three individuals have been remanded for seven days from August 12 to 18.
Mohd Alwi said police are also investigating how the drugs were smuggled into the lock-up.
He said police take drug abuse and trafficking seriously, including cases involving individuals within police premises or surrounding areas, and would conduct a transparent and thorough investigation to determine appropriate action based on the evidence.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted under Section 39B, offenders face the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of at least 12 strokes, while those convicted under Section 15(1)(a) face a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
