Nearly nine in 10 intimate-partner murders in Malaysia since 2017 were unplanned, police say

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 — Nearly nine in 10 intimate-partner murders recorded in Malaysia since 2017 happened without prior planning, with police saying most were triggered by escalating disputes, jealousy or arguments.

Of 165 such killings recorded between 2017 and June this year, 144 occurred without prior planning, while only 21 cases, or 12.7 per cent, showed elements of premeditation, Berita Harian reported today, citing Bukit Aman’s Serious Crimes Investigation Division (D9).

“The majority of murder cases involving intimate partners occurred spontaneously without prior planning. Such incidents were typically triggered by escalating conflicts such as misunderstandings, jealousy or arguments.

“These conflicts eventually led to murder,” Bukit Aman was quoted as saying.

The 165 cases accounted for 6.2 per cent of the 2,644 murders recorded nationwide over the same period.

Of the intimate-partner cases, 99 involved married couples, eight involved former husbands killing their former wives and 58 involved boyfriends and girlfriends.

Domestic disputes were the most commonly identified motive, accounting for 51 cases, followed by jealousy involving a third party with 45 and other disputes with 34.

Other motives included financial problems in 12 cases, drug-related factors in eight, intoxication in six and jealousy stemming from an inability to accept a separation in four. Two cases were linked to pregnancy and one to neglect.

Bukit Aman said its analysis showed emotional factors, including jealousy over a third party and an inability to accept a separation, were among the main triggers in cases investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department.

Police also found that only 16 of the 165 cases involved victims who had previously lodged reports against the eventual suspects.

Nine involved married couples, one involved a former husband who later killed his former wife and six involved boyfriends and girlfriends.

Ten of those reports related to disputes, while three each concerned threats and causing injury.

“This shows that the majority of victims had never lodged a police report before the incident,” Bukit Aman said.

Among the 21 killings where police found evidence of prior planning, six involved husbands killing their wives, two involved wives killing their husbands and four involved former husbands killing their former wives.

Eight involved boyfriends killing their girlfriends, while one involved a girlfriend killing her boyfriend.

Of the 144 cases without prior planning, 76 involved husbands killing their wives, 15 involved wives killing their husbands, four involved former husbands killing their former wives, 42 involved boyfriends killing their girlfriends and seven involved girlfriends killing their boyfriends.

Bukit Aman said the pattern of intimate-partner murders between 2017 and June this year did not show a significant increase or a trend it regarded as alarming.

“Nevertheless, the CID will continue to monitor the crime trend on an ongoing basis and strengthen prevention and enforcement efforts to ensure that intimate-partner violence can be curbed more effectively,” it said.

Police said 138 of the 165 cases, or 83.6 per cent, had been charged in court.
