SANDAKAN, Aug 8 — Malaysia is aiming to achieve a position within the top 10 of the Global Peace Index as Malaysia is currently ranked 12 out of 165 countries.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said within Asean, Malaysia ranked second behind Singapore and third in the Asia-Pacific region below Singapore and New Zealand.
“As we move towards the 13th Malaysia Plan, I have given a specific instruction to my secretary-general that we must work towards achieving a position within the top 10 of Global Peace Index.
“Security and stability create confidence, and confidence becomes the foundation upon which everything else is built,” he said in his speech at a dinner held in conjunction with the security briefing and assessment programme involving foreign representatives to the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) here yesterday.
Saifuddin Nasution also conveyed Malaysia’s appreciation to Australia and the Republic of Korea for their constructive reassessments of travel advisories involving the ESSZone.
“I would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Japan for its thoughtful efforts in reviewing and updating its travel advisory on two occasions, reflecting its continued commitment to ensuring that its advice remains aligned with prevailing conditions.
“Most recently, we welcomed the United States’ decision to undertake a similar review,” he added.
Saifuddin Nasution said, a review of these advisories would not only acknowledge Malaysia’s security achievements, but would also strengthen confidence, encourage tourism, promote sustainable investment and further deepen the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and respective countries.
He said, over the last 13 years, the government have invested RM723 million on the security of ESS Zone.
“As a result, we are now in a much better position, the ability to travel freely across our waters, visit our islands and engage with our communities is made possible through the unwavering commitment of the government led by the ministry through Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM),” he said. — Bernama
