KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — A debt collector with a prior criminal record has been arrested in connection with the confinement, abuse, and sodomy of a 14-year-old boy in Bukit Kemuning earlier this month.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed that the male suspect was arrested in his rented room in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, May 16.
He has been remanded for three days to assist with the investigation, Harian Metro reported.
“If the investigation is not yet complete, we will apply for an extension of the remand order,” Shazeli told a press conference at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters today.
“Give us the space to complete the investigation.”
Shazeli disclosed that the suspect is an ex-convict who was released from prison in April of last year, and had recently moved to Kuala Lumpur from the Kota Kemuning area.
“He works as a debt collector and moves around using various forms of public transport,” Shazeli said, adding that authorities are also investigating if the company he works for is legally registered.
The investigation found that the victim was chosen at random.
The suspect allegedly lured the teenager on May 12 by offering him a mobile internet package, on the condition that he help carry some items into the house.
The boy was later rescued by a neighbour who alerted the police.
To date, police have not identified any other victims linked to the suspect following the report.
